HUNTER EDUCATION IN ONTARIO

As of 2006 students have two options for hunting licenses. Both require successful completion of the Ontario Hunter Education course and exam. The options are as follows:

Class H1 Outdoors Card – Residents Only. The H1 card permits the cardholder to hunt with all methods permitted under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act. Applicants for this version of the Outdoors Card must pass both the Ontario Hunter Education Course exam and the Canadian Firearms Safety Course exam.

Class H2 Outdoors Card – Residents Only. The H2 card permits the cardholder to hunt with all methods permitted under the act except guns. Applicants for this version of the Outdoors Card must pass the Ontario Hunter Education Course exam. The program also reinforces the firearms safety information contained in the Canadian Firearms Safety Course.

Hunter Apprenticeship Safety Program (12-15 years)

Ontario's Hunter Apprenticeship Safety Program offers practical training for new hunters. Under this program young hunters can safely develop their hunting skills under the supervision of a qualified Mentor - a licensed and experienced hunter.
Two classes of Ontario Hunter Apprenticeship Safety Cards are also available - one for gun hunters A1 and one for non-gun hunters A2. Apprentices for the A1 version of the Outdoors Card must pass both the Ontario Hunter Education Course exam and the Canadian Firearms Safety Course exam. Apprentices for the A2 version of the Outdoors Card must pass the Ontario Hunter Education Course exam.

To obtain hunting accreditation, a new Ontario resident, who can provide proof of resident hunting license accreditation from any jurisdiction, may attempt the OHEC examination without taking the course. If unsuccessful, the course must be taken before attempting the exam again.
